Mr Stannering's Travelling Carnival, an annual visitor to Royston Vasey since 1968, set up on the Lower Common at dusk on Friday. By Saturday morning the candy-floss machine had attracted what Mr Stannering described as 'a quantity of moths I would not have expected at this latitude'.
Featured this year: the Hall of Whispers (closed by 11pm on grounds of acoustic distress to neighbours), the Mirror Maze (largely the same as in previous years, now with one fewer mirror, which has been left propped against the back of the lorry), and the legendary Coconut Shy, whose coconuts were withdrawn from circulation in 2019 and have not been replaced.
Sunday night's planned firework display was cancelled when the mist rolled in off the Fens around 18:30. By 19:00 the Carnival had become, in the words of one attendee, 'mostly fairground music and orange smudges'.
Mr Stannering plans to return in 2027. He has been asked, politely, by the Parish Council to consider an alternative pitch.
